-ING or Infinitive Form

There are many verbs that are always followed either by -ING form or the infinitive.

verb + infinitive verb

Common verbs or verb phrases followed by the infinitive form:

learn how

would like

want

seem

refuse

promise

prepare

offer

learn

hope

help

deserve

decide

afford

ask

Examples:

We should learn how to read at a young age.

Most people cannot afford to go on holiday every year.

I would like to work in the UK.

Common verbs or verb phrases followed by -ING form:

suggest

recommend

practice

mind

keep

involve

imagine

give up

finish

enjoy

deny

consider

carry on

avoid

Examples:

I would recommend practicing your speaking.

You should avoid eating red meat.

I’ve finished writing my report. 

Both -ING and Infinitive

There are a few that can be followed by both –ING or infinitive without changing meaning:

Examples:

I like to read/I like reading.  

You can start to write/You can start writing.
