C1 Advanced Exam
Strategy
This part is composed of 8 sections.
Part of the test is multiple choice.
Part of the test requires you to write words.
Questions 5 - 8 involve large reading passages.
The questions will be in a specific order, however you do not have to do them in order.
You should decide in advance how you'll do the exam based on your own strengths and weaknesses.
Students who are strong readers often prefer to do the reading section first.
Others prefer to get the Use of English part out of the way, since most people find it harder.
However, in general I advise: do any multiple choice questions last. You can always guess these if you are running out of time.
The parts are as follows:
USE OF ENGLISH
Part 1
This is a short text with missing words. You are given options for words to complete the gaps at the end of the passage. Read the text and decide which answer best fits each gap.
Points: 1 point each
*This is multiple choice and you should save this for last so you can guess if needed*
Part 2
This is a short text with missing words. You are not given the words. You must complete the gap using the best word. This part of the exam tests your knowledge of functional language.
Points: 1 point each
Correct spelling required
Part 3
You get another short test with gaps. At the end of each line is a root word. You must transform the root word so that it completes the text.
Points: 1 point each

Part 4
You receive a sentence and a word. You must paraphrase the first sentence using the word given to you.
Points: 2, 1 or 0 for each question, according to the accuracy of your response.

READING
Part 5
You are given one long text with six multiple-choice questions.
Points: 2 points each
Part 6
You are given one text with six gaps. You much decide which sentence completes each gap.
Points: 2 points each
Part 7
You are given one text or several short texts with 10 questions. You must match each question to something in the text(s).
Points: 1 point each
*The answers in this are easy to guess if you run out of time*
Copying the Answers
Be sure to leave time to write your answer on the answer sheet. You do not get extra time to transfer your answers.
Write clearly. The answers will be scanned into a computer.
The answer sheet looks like the one below.
You must use a pencil (B or HB).
You must write in capital letters.
Make corrections using an eraser.
